John R. “Jack” Overman, aged 82 of Fairborn, OH, passed away, unexpectedly, January 9, 2026. He was born on November 7, 1943, in Dayton, OH, the son of the late Edward and Margaret (Baker) Overman.

He lived a fulfilling life marked by service, dedication, and connection with those he cherished.

Jack served honorably in the United States Army, demonstrating his commitment to his country and the values it represents. He was a proud graduate of Stivers High School in Dayton, OH. Following his military service, he built a long-standing career as a brown & sharp machinist at the Apex Machine & Tool Company, where he was known for his craftsmanship and work ethic. 

Jack's spirit extended beyond his professional life. He had a passion for bowling, participating in numerous tournaments throughout the years which showcased his competitive nature. Friends and family vividly remember the joy and camaraderie he brought to both the bowling alley and card tables, especially during spirited games of euchre.

An endearing quality of Jack was his wonderful sense of humor. He was a devoted son, brother, uncle, and friend to many, always making those around him feel valued and appreciated. Jack took great pleasure in sharing time with his loved ones, and his friendships were abundant and meaningful.

He was a proud member of the Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church in Fairborn, OH, where he found a sense of community and belonging. Jack also cherished his travels, particularly his journeys in Colorado, where he created lasting memories amidst nature’s beauty.

In addition to his many talents and interests, Jack had a deep affection for his two beloved basset hounds, Ruby and Red. They were more than pets to him; they were cherished companions who brought joy and warmth into his life.

In addition to his parents, Jack is preceded in death by his siblings, JoAnn (Edward) Mills, Mary Louise (Edward) Carroll, Edward J. “Jerry” (Judith) Overman; nieces, Cheryl Coker, Jennifer Koverman; nephews, Justin Vanderpool, Douglas McDaniel; great-nephews, Brian, Michael; and brother-in-law, John Vanderpool. He is survived by two sisters, Margaret (Bill) Relph of Loveland, CO, Janice (John) Vanderpool of Castle Rock, CO; a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, extended family, and dear friends.

A memorial mass will be held at 11:00 AM, Monday, February 2, 2025, at the Mary Help of Christians Church, 954 N. Maple Avenue, Fairborn, OH, 45324. Inurnment with military honors to follow at 1:00 PM at the Dayton National Cemetery, 4400 W. Third Street, Dayton, OH, 45428. Arrangements in care of Belton-Stroup Funeral Home, Fairborn, OH. 

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that one may consider a memorial contribution to the Mary Help of Christians Parish (Fairborn, OH) in John's memory.
