John S. Wevurski, age 89 of Fairborn, passed away Monday September 28, 2026 at the Miami Valley Hospital with his family by his side. He was born August 25, 1937 in New York, New York, the son of the late John and Helen (Tolkin) Wevurski.

A chance encounter following high school graduation would ultimately change the course of John’s life. While riding the New York City subway, John happened to run into his former high school basketball coach. When his coach learned that John had no plans to attend college, he stepped in and arranged a basketball scholarship for him at Rio Grande College. The small college, nestled in a rural community in southern Ohio, was certainly a world away from the hustle and bustle of New York City that John had always known. However, he adapted quickly to his new surroundings, forming several lifelong friendships. Several of his college friends remained his closest friends for the rest of their lives. The most important person he met was the love of his life, Norma.

Career opportunities brought them to Fairborn where they both were teachers for Fairborn City Schools. John served as a math teacher as well as a coach for baseball, football, and softball, retiring after 34 years of service. John loved his role as coach and loved running into former players when he was out and about in Fairborn.

In the early years of retirement, John and Norma enjoyed traveling together and making many wonderful memories with friends and family along the way. When Norma’s health began to decline, John transitioned into the role of her devoted caregiver, lovingly remaining by her side until her passing in 2014. Through his unwavering care and commitment, he led by example, showing what love and devotion truly meant. John was equally proud of the roles he held within his family—as a father, grandfather, and eventually, great-grandfather. His family remained an important and cherished part of his life throughout the years.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Norma; and his sister and brother-in-law, Janet and Tom Swaim. Survivors include two daughters, Stephanie (Michael) Archer and Susie (Tim) Stegner, all of Powell, OH; five grandchildren, Jon (Michelle), Joe (Gaya), Nick (Kaitlin), Nate, Maddie (Alex) Thompson; four great-grandchildren, Delaney, Avery Kate, Marceline, Isabel, and two more babies on the way; two sisters, Ginny (Aldo) Dalsass of Pennsylvania, Judy (George) Matejunas of South Carolina; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other extended family and friends.

John will be laid to rest next to his wife at the Byron Cemetery. A gathering of family and friends will be held at the Belton-Stroup Funeral Home, 422 E. Dayton-Yellow Springs Rd., Fairborn on Sunday November 1, 2026 from 11:00 A.M. until 12:15 P.M. followed by a time of remembrance, during which family members will share memories and reflections on John’s life.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society or St Judes Hospital.
