Mary Evelyn Fueger, age 100, died January 16, 2025.
At the end of any visit with Evelyn, she would take your hand, hold it and lightly give it a kiss ~"it was good to see you." It was a gesture she learned years ago ~ and it became her signature expression of love.
The third of four children of Jesse and Dallas Norris, she was born January 26, 1924, and grew up in Bremen, Ohio. She is predeceased by husband Max Fueger (66 years), brothers Victor Norris and Eugene Norris; sister Marjorie Norris Gardner.
Evelyn is survived by daughter Susan Lowe (Raymond), daughter Leslie Greendyke (John), and son Jeff Fueger (Rebecca). Grandchildren and great grandchildren include David Lawson and Lauri Keener and Phoenix; Amy Janson and Cooper, Zigi and Isla; Max and Sarah Fueger; Nikki and Frank Gilmore and Philip and Ruth Evelyn; Brian Greendyke; Adam and Claire Lowe; Robyn and Ryan Whalen and Marion and Jane.
She is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins and much-loved friends.
Evelyn graduated from Rushcreek Memorial High School in 1941. She took a year off before starting nursing school at Lancaster Nursing School. She graduated in 1945, passed the State Boards on her first try ~and her first job was at Lancaster General Hospital, 1945.
In 1947, she moved to Dayton at the urging of her sister, Marjorie. She started working at Wright-Patt, Wood City in Industrial Medicine. And ~ she met Max Fueger....first date was a baseball game. They married in 1950, and raised Susan, Leslie, and Jeff. All through the years- Mitman Park, Rona Hill-she was active in the Fairborn community and her church, First Presbyterian Church of Fairborn. She was the oldest living member of that church. Evelyn kept her nursing license current while raising a family. She helped with the 1962 Polio vaccine program in Fairborn. In the mid-60's, she returned to work part-time at Greene Memorial Hospital, Xenia. On April 3,1974, she and many others were called back to work after the Xenia Tornado hit the city.
Retirement finally came in 1984. There was some traveling with Max~to Hawaii and a snorkel attempt, to Europe and the Oberammergau Passion Play, and trips to visit family.
With her background and her faith in God and community, she found ways to serve her family, her neighbors and her church. She volunteered with FISH Pantry, Senior Citizens, the Sweet Corn Festival, local American Heart Association, Rona Hills Women's Group, Presbyterian Women's Group. Her devotion to Max was present everyday while he was at Patriot Ridge-"Dear Evelyn-You are the Woman of my dream", and she was with him until he passed in 2016. Her favorite memories came from attending grandchildren's concerts, sports events, graduations, and weddings and then welcoming great grandchildren. Every one of us have our favorite "Grandma" recipes ~ always waiting when you visited -turkey sandwiches with butter, the best mashed potatoes, chocolate chip cookies (you got to make them with her!!), Texas Sheet Cake and Dirt Cake. And it was easy to watch TV with her...."THE GOLDEN GIRLS", "LET'S MAKE A DEAL" -always Door #2 for the Big Deal. A couple years ago, she was a pretty good Cincinnati Reds fan. Jeff made her the summer schedule-she watched the day games. She could talk about them the next day-and her favorite player- "Joey" Votto.
Evelyn celebrated her 100th birthday January 2024, a life well-lived and well-loved~ and she got her birthday wish-her favorite, Young's Jersey Dairy, Black Walnut ice cream. Anyone who knew Evelyn knew of her love of ice cream - and a warm, cozy blanket on her recliner, a soft neck pillow, and always enough Kleenex-plus one for her hand.
We want to express our sincere thanks and gratitude to the staff at OUR HOME, Fairborn and the caring members of HOSPICE CARE 360. And to Rev, Joe Hinds, First Presbyterian Church of Fairborn.
