Phillip Lynn Mitchell, age 69 of Fairborn, OH, passed away peacefully, in the comfort of home, Saturday, April 19, 2025. He was born November 29, 1955, in Akron, OH, the son of the late Phillip Vance and Leta (Danner) Mitchell.
Phillip led a life marked by unwavering commitment, humor, and a profound love for his family and community.
Phillip began his career as an air traffic controller before completing his degree and embarking on a distinguished career as the Chief Executive Finance Officer at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. His expertise and leadership in finance were invaluable to the operations at the base, where he contributed significantly for many years. Phillip also served as the treasurer for the Rona Community Church, where he dedicated time and effort to support the church's initiatives and foster a sense of community.
An alumnus of Wright State University, Phillip earned a master’s degree in business administration. Phillip had a passion for storytelling, often sharing fond memories, including a humorous account of being fired by President Ronald Reagan during the strikes in 1981. His laughter and jovial spirit filled rooms, creating warm and memorable gatherings with family and friends.
An avid lover of cinema, Phillip had a particular fondness for movies, especially war films, and enjoyed unwinding with a good joke. He found joy in a variety of interests, such as golfing and spending time with his beloved pets, particularly cats and dogs. Phillip's love for family and laughter defined many moments in his life, with his proudest accomplishments being his only son and his wife.
Phillip honorably served in the United States Air Force from 1974 to 1978, displaying the same dedication and integrity in military service as he did in civilian life.
In addition to his parents, Phillip is preceded in death by his dear wife of 44 years, Ruth E. (Riley) Mitchell; father-in-law, Ralph Riley; and beloved dog, Katie. He is survived by a son, Sean Phillip Mitchell; sister, Debra (Larry) Ealy; mother-in-law, Helen Riley; loyal cat, Mia; extended family, and friends.
A funeral service will be held at 11:30 A.M., Thursday, April 24, 2025, at the Rona Community Church, 1082 Rona Pkwy Drive, Fairborn, OH, 45324. The family will receive friends from 10:00 A.M., until the time of service, Pastor Jim Smith officiating. Burial to follow at Byron Cemetery, Fairborn, OH. Arrangements entrusted to Belton-Stroup Funeral Home, Fairborn.
