Herschel R. Whitt, a highly decorated Vietnam veteran who proudly served in the BIG RED ONE, age 75, of Fairborn, passed away Friday, July 30, 2021. He was born May 9, 1946 in West Liberty, Kentucky; the son of the late Homer and Rella (Davis) Whitt. Herschel is survived by his beloved wife, Kathee Whitt; son, Kevin (Corie) Whitt; step-son, Ray (Amy) Cusick and Bill Elliott; step-daughter, Jayne (David) Clapper; grandchildren, Cameron Whitt, Ethan Cusick, Emma Cusick, Mady Osborne, Delaney Osborne, Anna (Justin) Felfoldi, Skyler Shipper, and Chance Setters; great-grandson, Dawson Felfoldi; sister, Sandy (Mike) Lyons; brother, Donnie (Diona) Whitt; and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, and uncles. Herschel served in the United States’ Army during the Vietnam War and earned the rank of Staff Sergeant. He earned three bronze stars with valor and a Purple Heart during his time serving in the BIG RED ONE. Some of his hobbies include fishing and golfing, where he golfed a Hole in One. Herschel was an avid Ohio State fan and a playful prankster with a big heart. Kathee and Herschel loved to pull pranks on each other at work to keep everyone laughing. He never met a stranger and will be dearly missed by all who knew him. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, August 11 at 12 PM at the Belton-Stroup Funeral Home, 422 E. Dayton-Yellow Springs Road, Fairborn, OH 45324. Family and friends may visit from 11 AM until the time of service. Herschel will be laid to rest at Byron cemetery with a rendering of Army Honors. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made out to the Parkinson’s Foundation or St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital in memory of Herschel.
